Crime prevention in Shrewsbury

National incidents of burglary, property crime and criminal damage have been slowly falling in recent years, but they continue to be a serious issue for police and society, and only the foolish will ignore them.

Although Shrewsbury cannot be considered a hotspot for crime compared to metropolitan centres, the latest crime figures still show around one burglary a day being reported to police in the local constituency area.

Crime statistics collated for the Shrewsbury & Atcham area shows 486 burglaries reported to police in the 12 months to November last. Crime figures for criminal damage and arson are greater with a total of 834 incidents logged by police stations over the same period.

Statistics on Shrewsbury burglary rates do not tell the whole story, of course. The figures are academic when it is your home that has been burgled or your business premises that have been broken into, your goods stolen and your staff valuables snatched.

Clearing up the mess, replacing locks on windows and doors, reissuing keys and the other headaches that follow a break-in can be a nightmare.

And it's not just the damage to property and loss of goods that leave a mark on the victims. Many will tell of the personal trauma at the shock of burglary, of no longer, feeling safe at home or office and a painful sense of invasion.

Businesses not only need to replace costly stock and apologise to customers for late deliveries but must also expect a significant rise in insurance premiums.

It is well known in police circles that homes and business without visible burglar alarms are up to five times more likely to be burgled than those who do have them installed.

PoliceUK recommends that all homes and businesses take the necessary measures to protect their property by:

  • Locking all doors and windows at night
  • Keeping all keys safe and secure
  • Installing a good burglar alarm

Shropshire Council offers much the same advice saying that many thieves will think again about breaking into a property that has a visible burglar alarm. Their safety experts also warn against installing cheap burglar alarm systems and suggest that you:

  • Get at least three quotes and some specialist advice from a reputable company
  • Use burglar alarm installations recommended by insurance companies
  • Check that the alarm system satisfies British or European standards

The Council adds: "Low-cost burglar alarms are less reliable and can — through false alarms — be a nuisance to both you and your neighbours."

The Metropolitan Police also recommends that, as a minimum, that homeowners fit external and visible intruder alarms to both the front and back of their homes if they want to stay safe.

And they say that a security alarm system should be installed by a registered security company affiliated to an accredited board such as the National Security Inspectorate (NSI) is by far the best option.

UK CrimeStats provides burglary crime statistics for Shropshire, and Shrewsbury is provided by CrimeStats based on information supplied by the Economic Policy Centre.
