Staffordshire property crime figures

It is heartening to hear that burglaries of homes and business premises in the Staffordshire area have been steadily falling for some time.

But it will be not much comfort to know that county-wide burglary levels across Staffordshire are down from previous years if it is your home or business that has been broken into.

It will be especially painful if no burglar alarm is fitted to your property and you are faced with extensive, damage and valuable items stolen.

Agencies warn that the trauma of suffering a burglary can be every bit as shocking as the loss of personal possessions or the damage caused to property and belongings during the break-in.

The invasion of privacy and feelings of insecurity can result in real psychological harm to victims who may suffer symptoms for many years after the event.

Although crime levels are on a downward trend, the UK crime statistics for Staffordshire reveal 986 burglaries recorded in the year to February 2018 and a total of 5803 reported incidents of criminal damage or arson across the county.

Those figures amount to a great many incidents of burglary or criminal damage being reported to Staffordshire Police every single day.

PoliceUK collates and records crime figures for police forces throughout Britain. And it warns that premises without any burglar alarm systems in place will be up to five times more likely to be targeted by intruders than properties that have adopted even the most basic of security measures.

They list a number home safety measures that everyone should take to protect homes and businesses:

  • Lock all doors and windows whenever the premises are empty
  • Keep all keys out of sight and away from the letterbox and windows
  • Install a burglar alarm to deter criminals

Staffordshire Police has produced a brochure giving home security advice which includes:

  • Prevent intruders getting to the back and sides of your home by installing sturdy fencing or gates.
  • Fit sturdy padlocks to shed and garage doors, and make sure that the doors are solid.
  • Get at least three quotes and specialist advice from companies that supply alarms. Use companies registered with either the National Security Inspectorate or Security Systems and Alarm Inspection Board.

They say that many burglars will avoid breaking into a property where a response alarm is fitted, and their advice is to get professionals to install the intruder alarm and to explain how to operate it correctly.

UK CrimeStats provides burglary crime statistics for Staffordshire based on data collated by the Economic Policy Centre.
