North Wales property crime figures

North Wales is not an official region of Wales but covers the areas around Wrexham, Rhyl, Colwyn Bay, Llandudno, and Bangor. It also takes in Snowdonia National Park and the island of Anglesey

The borders of North Wales are thought to be Ceredigion and Powys to the south with Shropshire and Cheshire to the east.

North Wales may not be considered a particular crime hotspot when it comes to house burglary or criminal damage to property, but neither are homes and businesses in the region exactly free of unwanted intruders.

According to UK CrimeStats, the main crime and postcode data research and analysis platform for the UK, there were 3,197 burglaries in the North Wales region in the 12 months to February 2018.

Over the same period, there were a recorded 6,517 incidents of criminal damage or arson in North Wales.

This level of crime shows how it makes sense for anyone who cares about the security of their home or business to take measures to protect property against unwanted intruders.

Statistics hardly count for much either if it happens to be your home that has been burgled or your business that has been targeted by thieves.

A burglary can not only mean the loss of valuables and damage to your home or business it can also mean personal shock and trauma for victims of crime, who may no longer feel safe at home or work.

PoliceUK, which studies statistics on crime and policing in the UK, has found that not only that homes and businesses without security alarms in place are up to five times more likely to get burgled. Even worse is the fact that a burgled home or business is far more liable to be hit by thieves more than once.

North Wales Police has issued advice on burglary prevention which says: "Burglars will select their targets when they think they have the best opportunity to carry out the crime undetected, with the smallest number of obstacles, such as unoccupied or insecure homes and buildings."

They recommend that burglar alarms are installed and maintained by a company that is subject to inspection by a UKAS accredited body such as the National Security Inspectorate (NSI)

Even the simplest of security steps can make a big difference in keeping your home safe from burglary. The main ones, according to PoliceUK, are to:

  • Lock your doors and windows every time you leave the house
  • Hide all keys, including car keys, out of sight and away from the letterbox
  • Install a visual burglar alarm to keep intruders at bay.

UK CrimeStats figures are based on data released by the Economic Policy Centre which makes every effort to ensure that the data for UKCrimeStats is accurate and up to date.
